NAME: Juno Steel
CANON: The Penumbra Podcast
CANON POINT: S3, E1 Juno Steel and The Man in Glass
AGE: 39
BACKGROUND: Here. (background contains mentions of alcoholism, child abuse, suicidal ideation, and violence.}
PERSONALITY: Some might say that Juno Steel doesn't care enough, but the fact of the matter is this: Juno Steel cares too much.
First impressions may lead one to believe that Juno is an old-fashioned detective posed anachronistically against the backdrop of Mars, millennia in the future; a cynical jerk who likes to stick his nose where it doesn't belong for a living. And that's all true: being nice isn't Juno's main concern when it comes to his work unless it's going to get him out of a tight spot, so he typically doesn't waste his time with niceties. He likes to get straight to the point, even if it means being rude about it because at the end of the day that's what gets the job done.
He definitely does get the job done. He's clever and resourceful, capable to putting pieces of various puzzles together in order to crack the most difficult of cases. Juno is always suspicious of everyone, but that's why he always comes out on top of his cases at the end of the day. Everyone is suspect and he goes and rules it all out bit by bit until he finds the core of the problem... and then charges in stun gun blazing. This usually comes from that part of Juno's hind brain that actively is looking for danger. He's the complete opposite of subtle most days and while he's learned how to make that work for him (see S3, E1: Man in Glass) some days it just doesn't (see: S1, E5: Train from Nowhere.) It's really a toss up when you take Juno Steel on a more covert mission, but he's always determined to make it work whether he's found out or not. That determination on it's own makes him invaluable as a detective.
When given that initial glance, it's hard to find something good to say about Juno Steel. He's moody as hell, sullen, uncooperative when he wants to be, and drowns himself in whiskey at the end of a hard night because he doesn't know what else to do with himself. His lack of faith in people damages most of his personal relationships and makes him mistrustful of everyone that comes within three feet of him. When it comes to those that he does trust, he questions their every move, the opposite of trust if you ask anyone else. He vacillates wildly between sarcasm and anger, trying to make himself seem unapproachable, which makes you wonder why he wants to help people as a private investigator in the first place.
However, Juno is well-meaning. He cares—maybe he cares too much. He stayed in a city that ultimately didn't want him only because he believed it needed him to be its hero, needed him to be better than all of its corrupted leadership combined. After all, Juno's childhood was inundated with heroes created by his mother. Despite the tragedy that involved her losing her job thus making her erratic depressive behavior worse, Juno still believed in heroes, even if none of them ever came to his or his brother's rescue when her depression and abusive behaviors worsened. Upon leaving Mars, after realizing the little red planet didn't need him, Juno is still determined to be a hero, a better hero than he made himself out to be before. No longer the protagonist of his own story maybe, but part of a larger party meant for a greater cause.
But just because he's here for any and every noble cause doesn't erase the fact that he's brash and doesn't think before he reacts the majority of the time. A lot of Juno's actions are done while thinking on his feet, as if he were of the belief that if he stopped moving he'd simply be dead in the water. He's taken knives and bullets for people he barely knew, dodged laser fire and traffic, and has even had a deadly amount of blood siphoned from his body just for the sake of others. He makes snap decisions based on who he can protect, how fast he can protect them, and how much harm he can divert from everyone else to himself. At the end of the day, Juno wants to save lives and refuses to throw anyone else under the bus. He would rather make the sacrifice than have anyone else bear it—he's a protector.
The martyrdom that comes with Juno's reckless streak can be considered selfish at times. While he's become more self-aware of this, it doesn't erase the compulsion to blame himself for every bad thing that has happened to his loved ones and friends. When it comes to playing the blame game Juno typically plays for keeps, shouldering every fault to the point where he pushes others away who try to explain that he's hardly the cause. He's trying to do his best when it comes to his aspect of his personality, but mental health for Juno has just recently become a work in progress, and he's never exactly been his own best friend.
By no means has Juno fully healed. He still has miles to go when it comes to all of the emotional damage wrought onto him by his childhood and himself. However, what he now understands is that fact that he can indeed change, that he can finally take responsibility and not just for every little thing that goes wrong, but for his relationships. He doesn't push people away anymore, rather wants to work together with them even if they woefully don't want to work with him. Optimism even shines a light on his inner monologue now and again, refreshingly so.
His perseverance to claw his way up from previously drowning in depression and guilt and whiskey for all of those years. He has hope, which is something he never used to rely on before. Optimism, which he used to toss carelessly into the wind because who needs it. Juno Steel is ready to step his game up, by the time Buddy Aurinko takes him aboard the Carte Blanche. Because fuck big pharma. The good guys have to win, even if they aren't exactly the paradigm of what the good guys should be.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Seasoned Detective | Juno has spent a long time working with the law as a cop for the Hyperion City Police Department, chasing down criminals. After an incident that left him disgraced and hated by the HCPD, Juno peeled away from them and became an independent private investigator. With over a decade of work under his belt, Juno's problem solving skills are some of the sharpest (albeit, most unorthodox) around. He's a ferocious hoarder when it comes to information, capable of stringing the strangest clues together and knowing precisely where to look for the most critical pieces of evidence. When the pressure is on, Juno doesn't let it get to him, rather, he embraces it and laughs in its face. He's a detective that doesn't fear a crushing deadline, and when things get down to the wire, he's always there at the eleventh hour with some sort of solution.
Sharp Shooting | Prior to having lost his eye, Juno was well-known for his ability to take all of the most dangerous shots and make them look nearly effortless (and he wasn't modest about it either.) He's well-versed in using standard laser pistols (preferably set to stun), but has some knowledge regarding old-world bullet-packing guns as well. While at the moment Juno is missing an eye, he's been working on his aim with practso that it won't be a hindrance in the future.
INVENTORY:
- One beautiful golden dress, heels + eyepatch
- A laser pistol strapped to his thigh
- The Gilded Globe of Reaches Far tucked into his dress (as far as we know, it doesn't do anything on its own)
MOONBLESSING: Iris (Nasty Awful Swan)
